Milltown Completes Weekend Double
Monday June 28, 2010

North York Astros looked impressive in their defeat of Brantford Galaxy last week, but never looked like repeating their performance at home to Milltown FC at Esther Shiner Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Milltown completed a weekend double with Sunday’s 4-2 win over the Astros, following the community of Milton team’s 4-3 defeat of Portugal FC on Friday night.

Erick Olazabal  opened the scoring at the 21st minute for Milltown and Agustin De Medina made it 2-0 at 40 minutes.

Astros forward Mahyar Kohbad reduced the lead to 2-1 just before the interval for a 2-1 Milltown lead at half-time.

Martijn Kuijpers increased the lead for Milltown at 50 minutes and Thierry Mangwa Batomen  made it 4-1 at 77 minutes.  Kohbad then scored his second and North York’s second for a 4-2 final score. It was Kohbad’s eighth goal of the season.

Milltown improve to 4-2-3 for 15 points and second to York Region Shooters in the standings following Sunday’s win and they will see action at home on Friday against the top team, that’s an 8 pm kickoff at Bishop Reding.

Brampton Lions took a 2-0 lead early in the second half to give the club its first victory of the season, a 2-1 defeat of St. Catharines Wolves at Victoria Park, while in one other game played Sunday, Milltown FC looked strong in their 4-2 win over North York Astros.

Brampton forward Blazej Skoczylas opened the scoring for the home side at the 10 minute mark, he closed in on a strong cross and connected to beat Wolves’ goalkeeper Claudio Perri from 6 yards. It was 1-0 at the interval.

Cameron Medwin struck the second goal at 58 minutes for Brampton and at the 80th minute Aaron Vanvelzen found the net past the Lions goalkeeper Roy Blanche to reduce the lead to 2-1, a score that remained until the final whistle.

The result ended a run of the first seven games of the season without a win for Brampton, now tied with St. Catharines Wolves at the foot of the First Division, both teams having a 1-6-1 record for 4 points.

In one other game scheduled for Sunday night, a severe thunderstorm washed out the Toronto Croatia vs. Serbian White Eagles game at Centennial Park in Etobicoke. The surface was flooded, forcing the game to be postponed.
